Abstract: Obstea vranceana is a property regime that demands sociological inquiry. This article treats the topic in the light of anthropology of law and tries to identify rules and principles that put order in this system. It focuses on the interaction between statutes and laws that come from the state, on one hand, and coustomary laws and interpretations from the local communitites, on the other hand.
