Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The Second World War represents the greatest tragedy known in the history of humanity. 60 years after the end of this huge cataclysm there still is an ample effort of investigation, illustrated by a speciality literature of astounding dimensions, that intensifies the interest of the specialists and of the large audience for the knowledge and interpretation of this tragic event, as well as of its consequences for Europe and the entire world. The present study synthesises the consequences brought out by the change of the relation of political and military forces in favour of Moscow, with negative effects to the plan of the evolution of democracy in several European countries, Romania included.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): As any totalitarian regime which aims at manipulating the people it leads, the Romanian communist regime, despite its denomination, has engaged itself in a continuous battle focused upon destroying the Romanian people's social and spiritual communion. Between 1947 and 1989, in Romania, the totalitarian regime tried to gradually eliminate at least from the public life the traditional customs and religious symbols and to create a new and completely desacralised type of custom with a more or less evident political connotation. The holiday as a festivity, more often than not nominated celebration, was used as a turning point in changing the focus from the maximum spiritual enjoyment of the traditional holiday to the spiritual vacuum of the celebration. It led the transformation from communion to the simplistic gathering of individuals, from the sacred ritual to the profane show. The mass-media represented at that time mainly by the press, and especially by the party-devoted press, was one of the main vehicles for the propaganda of the new symbols of Socialism which had to be assimilated by the population as fast and as thorougly as possible. The study undertaken on the Scânteia newspaper collection (1945-1989), which had become the voice of the Romanian Labour Party and subsequently of the Romanian Communist Party, proved to be particularly eloquent from this viewpoint. It actually illustrates step by step  all the methods used by the regime in order to manipulate the people's spiritual life.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): This article deals with the problems of marketplaces in Eastern Europe, within the theoretical framework of the economic anthropology and with an ethnographic focus on the Progresul Marketplace in Bucharest. The author is considering the hypothesis of the open-air trade as a laboratory or a workshop in re-learning the capitalist economy in Romania as well as in the other East European countries. The field data highlight that, despite of a high degree of informality, the open-air markets allow the development of some mechanisms specific to the market economy, such as the direct negotiation, credit relationships, trading specialisation by distinguishing the wholesale from the retail trade, investments etc. Applied anthropology is able, in relation to such processes, to undertake a mediation between the specialists of the open-air commerce and the public authorities responsible of the peaceful process of this trade. The attempt of conceptualising the open-air market relationships can go beyond the debate of the patterns of economic integration by focusing on the typology of traders and marketplaces, by pointing out the role of innovation in the making of profit, as well as by understanding distribution in terms of networks” (instead of units) of consumption.
