Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The article represents a sociological analysis of the transition period, focusing on the functioning of social institutions and their mutual relationships. An increase in social disfunctionalities justifies a diagnosis of generalized institutional pathology. Social institutions in Romania can be considered to a large extent responsible for deepening social conflicts and for the creation of several parallel Romanias, that seem to share little if at all. These institutional practices lead to the accumulation of a serious conflictual potential, which may impose high costs on the Romanian society. The arguments in favor of a process of institutional pathology are multi-dimensional, concerning issues such as: sterile disputes on the legitimacy of political groups, intense and chaotic legislative dynamics, lack of accuracy in defining objectives for various institutions, using some institutions for other aims than their defining ones, and erosion of public trust in social institutions that are blamed for widespread corruption.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): Romania’s integration in the European Union, in 2007, asks a fundamental question: To what extent is Romanian economy prepared to face the requirements of competition on a unique European market? The study is trying to answer this question dealing with the main directions of the Romanian strategy, able for a competitive and dynamic integration. The main objectives of the Lisbon 2000 Strategy are presented; starting from 2007 these are also Romania's objectives. They must be taken into account and integrated in the Romanian policies and strategies of the economic and social development. The paper also points out the gap, concerning some fields, between Romania and the countries which adhered to the European Union in 2004 and suggests at the same time some possible ways in order to reduce this gap, as well as to establish some main priorities.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): Nowadays we are passing through a change of paradigm, after the radical rupture with the European idea generated by the dividing, for half a century, of our continent. This study analyses the origins and specifics of Europe, as well as the slow evolution of the European idea, up until modern times. It also relieves the proceedings of gradual affirmation of the European identity consciousness, also expressed by the elaboration of numerous projects to achieve an institutional and politic unity of Europe, projects that have been made available for practice in the after war period.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The transition to democracy and the consolidation were generally explained by processes conditioned by the former communist structures (the path dependency theory), or by processes determined by the competition between recent political actors (the competition theory). The wide differences in the consolidation of democracy in the region forced many scholars to consider other relevant factors. The cultural factors have been neglected for a long period of time, but Putnam’s research on democratic performance in the early 90s in terms of social capital revivified the debate. We intend in this research paper to estimate the importance of these cultural factors for the people’s support for democracy. We find out that social capital is not at all a predictor for the support for democracy, contrary to the expectations derived from the social capital theory when compared to several other factors.
