Abstract: Work performance varies from one group to another, as each group is unique. Each group has its own degree of cohesion and structure. It consists of different types of individuals and has its own rules that are accepted differently by each member. Cohesion is the group characteristic which provides more information about how members identify themselves with the group and how cooperative are they in meeting the group's goals. This paper proves that group cohesion influences directly and positively the group performance and quality of its work activity and it also proves that group structure analysis is the key for improving the degree of group cohesion. The research was conducted in the Outbound Sales department of the telemarketing company Studio Moderna on 14 teams with 15 members each. The study methods used were the sociometric test on which cohesion indexes were calculated and sociograms were builded and the statistical regression which was used to demonstrate both, the direct link between cohesion and group performance and the direct link between cohesion and quality of group work activity. First of all, the present study demonstrates that, under proper leadership, a group with a higher degree of cohesion will have a higher work performance and a higher quality of work activity than a group with a lower degree of cohesion. And secondly, this paper brings to the attention the importance of group structure in analyzing its cohesion in order to make proper changes at group level for increasing cohesion and performance.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): This study starts by questioning the relevance and comparativity of the evaluation data in absence of a universal standard of reference. By analyzing a database with 1.000 indicators collected using the scale 1-5 (within large from 8 countries: USA, Romania, West Germany, Ireland, Bulgaria, Hungary, UK, Netherlands) I suggested a new perspective: evaluation of the data obtained by questionnaires to be considered with reference to the global perspective of the dynamics of the system which is being measured. It is necessary to consider not only each evaluated aspect but also the global context of the system of which it is part. From this perspective, the questionnaire data may show a new facet: they are important indicators of the state of social systems. The SEDA scheme of evaluation (Zamfir, 1980b) provides a way to compensate for the lack of comparative data in the evaluation process. By systematic approach, we can report a particular indicator to all other indicators measured in other systems.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): Although it is true that sociology was born in Nineteenth-century France – at least as far as the name is concerned – with Auguste Comte, it is equally true that the years between the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries were decisive in establishing it as a university-level discipline, despite the resistance of a number of antisociological philosophical and historical currents and positions ideologically opposed against anything addressing social matters. It must be noted with equal emphasis that the French contribution alone would not suffice to explain what occurred afterwards, especially in Germany and the rest of Europe, Spain and Portugal, Italy and Switzerland, just to name the territories closest to and bordering, more or less, on France itself. Several histories of sociology have already outlined the dynamics of the contributions made by countries other than France during the early stages of the discipline. But the contextual references are generally of a national nature. It would be well worthwhile, therefore, to promote a European-wide analysis of the issue: a dedicated research project might constitute a starting point for further initiatives aimed at consolidating, for example, the network set up in 2003 in Lisbon by Portugal, Spain, France and Italy (and joined at a later stage by Greece), and formalized in 2007 as RESU, that is, the Réseau des Associations de Sociologie de l’Europe et des Pays du Sud [Network of the Sociological Associations of Europe and Southern Countries]. The same can be said for the Balkan Forum founded in 2011 in Tirana, with participation of Albania and Bulgaria.

Dimitrie Cantemir – Forerunner of European Sociology

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The paper aims at making an analysis of the erudite Dimitrie Cantemir from the perspective of contemporary sociology. The ideas brought forth by this paper can be summarized as follows: The erudite prince, whom Nicolae Iorga characterised as “raised among books of wisdom”, managed to be a forerunner in the field of the future-to-be science of sociology. His fundamental work in this direction is Descriptio Moldaviae [Description of Moldavia], written upon request of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. Being written in Latin, as the philosopher-prince wrote this book of reference as foundation for the European sociology, allowed it to be studied by all European learners interested in aspects of a science that was to be defined. Moreover, arguments in support of the assertion that Dimitrie Cantemir is a forerunner of the science of sociology can also be found in other reference works, studies and monographs. A significant example is his work Hronicul vechimei a romano-moldo-vlahilor [Chronicle of the old history of the Romano-Moldo Vlachs] in which, as a true sociologist, Cantemir makes a comprehensive analysis of the way in which the Romanians had lived in Dacia, their organization, customs, social hierarchy and their cultural-social relations with other European peoples, considering them a “bridge between the Orient and the West”. Historia incrementorum atque decrementorum Aulae Othomanicae [The History of the Ascent and Descent of the Ottoman Court], although claimed by historians, is a reference work for the encyclopaedic mind of Dimitrie Cantemir, and a fundamental one for the European sociology. This book, existing in the Library of the American Congress, describes true sociologic investigations about the Turkish society and about the other European states of that time, which coexisted with the Ottoman Empire.
