Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The paper herein briefly presents some representative theories and points of view on the civil society concept. The author emphasizes that the recent sociological studies and researches made obvious that the concept of civil society is one of the most frequently used in the political discourses on the phenomena of transition in post-communist countries. However, despite its frequency, the meanings it covers still remain traced by ambiguity not only for the speakers but also for the audience. Consequently, the main aim of the paper is to review some "strong" perspectives of the concept of civil society. Meanwhile, starting from one of M. Holmes' observations, the author suggests the need for conceptual rebuilding. In the final section of the paper one drafts the concept of civil society which might be seen as better adapted to the post-communist realities comprehension.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): This article focuses on social capital and entrepreneurship from an unusual methodological perspective. First the analyses are based on networks since it is our belief that social capital cannot be captured unless stable patterns of interaction are considered. Then we see community as a methodological arena full of social meanings hard to be identified on wide representative samples. Therefore case studies, even not appropriate for generalizations, make interpretations and in-depth understanding of social life a lot easier. A set of genuine facts that goes against theory and researcher intuition might reveal a solid logic of events and information chaotically spread over the social world. A strong hypothesis comes up from the main findings of this study: entrepreneurs have strong, double-checked, social contacts because they try to cover a trust deficit.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): In this paper social exchange relations, association and entrepreneurship as responses to community problems and a low level of local opportunities are studied in a geographical and social isolated Romanian plain commune. The two villages of Fulga commune are traditional communities characterized by strong norms of similarity and conservative values. Trust, openness or other modernity values do not sustain associations and collective actions but the citizens' participation could be situationally motivated. The high proportion of population involved in agricultural field and the number of people eligible for social benefits grater than the number of occupied people are correlated with low levels of human capital and living standard. There are few private initiatives, which are oriented to survival and short-term achievement and they have almost nothing to do with social and economic history of the commune but life history of those involved in.
