Şcoala de la Toronto. Contribuţia lui Harold Innis
The School of Toronto. The Contribution of Harold Innis
Paul Dobrescu
Abstract: The paper is dedicated to the Toronto School of Communication and to Harold Innis, who is recognized as the founding father of this school even by its most famous representative, Marshall McLuhan. The analysis focuses on the central concept of Innis’ work, that of bias of communication. Innis’ inquiry is mainly historical, meaning that the author seeks to identify the influence of media in creating a time or a space bias. Despite this historical character, the core of his investigation is the bias of contemporary civilization. According to the Canadian author, this bias is a consequence of the monopoly of knowledge created by the prevalence of written press, by its obsession with space at the expense of time. Contemporary civilization is excessively concerned with the present time and obscures both past and future. A certain type of rigidity emerges, accompanied by reluctance to explore and exploit other dimensions then the space-related ones. The paper makes some clarifications regarding the “technological determinism” usually associated with the Toronto School. The analysis shows that this is an oversimplification, since the core of Innis’ work is that only the balance between space and time can provide for the long-term survival of civilizations.

Sociologia emoţiilor: teorii culturale
Sociology of Emotions: Cultural Theories
Septimiu Chelcea
*University of Bucharest
Abstract: The aim of this overview text is to signal the emergence and structuration of a new field of study in the landscape of social and human sciences: the sociology of emotions. The text presents the main concepts and dihotomies in the sociological treatement of emotions and the main cultural theories of this field. Finally, the common elements of these are laid out. I suggest the possibility to treat simpathy through the theory of prosocial behavior theory and I suggest that the analysis of "emotion labor" is very productive for the social context of Romania.

The Sense of Property, Deprivation and Memory in the Case of Obştea Vrânceană
Monica Vasile
Abstract: The system of collective property over forests that we find in Vrancea Region, obştea, has participation as fundamental principle. Each member of the obştea has the right to participate in the village assembly, in the voting process, equal right at the distribution of revenues. In this context, the sense of property that the members of the entitled communities manifest towards their collective forests is an element that becomes important, beyond any other elements like institutional arrangements or economic issues. This article tries to grasp the affective and material elements that form the sense of property on one side, and, on the other side, the sense of deprivation in the case of Obştea Vrânceană. Moreover, it offers theoretical insights for the study of these "hidden transcripts", the less obvious part of property, which is not sufficiently treated in the sociological and anthropological literature.

Problema identităţii în spaţiul frontierei. Reflecţii asupra interdependenţelor culturale româno-sârbe în Clisura Dunării
Carmen Bulzan
Abstract: This article compresses some of the reflections upon the identity of the Romanian-Serbian frontier zone in the area called Danube's Gorge (Clisura Dunării). The questions I have asked myself about the social life in the Romanian and Serbian communities, located on both banks of the Danube (which marks the Romanian-Serbian frontier), derived from the sociological observations and testimonies of the inhabitants from the displaced villages that have been studied during 2005-2006. The historical-geographical and social-economic conditions have granted the appearance of the acculturation process, expressed through language, religious (orthodox) practices, and attitudes towards values and so on. Which are the rights granted to the Romanian and Serbian minorities by the territories. states on which they live? What is the future that awaits in matter of identity for this “ethnical isolated” communities? What other means of intercultural communication can appear in the actual context? These are some of the necessary questions in building up the project for trans-frontier development and education for European democratic citizenship.

Modernization, Cleavages and Voting Behavior in East Europe. An Analysis of Romanian Voting Behavior in Comparative Perspective
Susanne Pickel
Abstract: Since 1989 many Eastern European transformation states have shown a tendency towards frequent changes of government and witnessed the defeat of ruling parties in elections. Such voting behavior may be traced back to various deficits in the interrelation between parties and voters. One of those deficits will be analyzed in this paper: The respective parties lack a strong link with the population; continuous (structural and functional) relations between parties and voters apparently do not exist. The study of interrelations between political representatives and those represented and the subsequent idea of cleavages have been introduced into the electoral and party studies by Stein Rokkan and Seymour Martin Lipset (1967): Cleavages are societal conflicts that are transferred into political divisions and represented by particular parties (Eith 2001; Schmitt 2001). Rokkan and Lipset describe parties as the main “transmission belt” from group interests to political positions. Parties act on cleavages that stabilize the party system.
