Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The article studies the South-Eastern European area, or the Balkans, in light of a history of common social life and neighborhood. The author focuses on several sociological issues which are crucial in understanding the specificity of this area. These issues are very diverse, in areas such as social structure, ancient agricultural technology, the household, housing styles, and religious beliefs. For example, as for the religious beliefs, we can see that religious differences do not necessarily lead to violent opposition in the everyday life. There are many shared beliefs among different religions, probably resulted from pseudo-conversions imposed by military and political conquests.

Abstract (Rezumat în limba engleză): The paper analyzes the Romanian sociology in the communist period (1944-1989), from a sociological and epistemological point of view. The Romanian sociology developed during the communist period, from the very beginning, as a distancing reaction towards the Marxist sociology and as an attempt to assimilate the paradigms of the non-Marxist sociology, the antebellum Romanian sociology and the Western sociology. The development of the Romanian sociology occurred under a triple challenge: being ideologically and politically accepted by the communist regime, as a useful and legitimate discourse, while avoiding being seized by the communist ideology and structuring its own scientific organization; last but not least, it had to position itself in relation to the Marxist-Leninist theoretical and ideological complex. The strategy of using the valuable elements” of the antebellum Romanian sociology and the Western sociology was the main factor in adopting these paradigms. The Romanian sociology during the communist period situated itself at a micro-level and a sectorial level, and it was predominantly oriented towards the empirical research, unlike the Marxist-Leninist paradigm. Therefore the Romanian sociology aimed towards a semi-subterranean social reform, bottom-up, a reform focused on social sectors.
